Overview

This resource provides a quick overview of accessibility settings that library staff can use on Android devices. It could be helpful for troubleshooting with a patron having issues with an Android device.

Quick Facts

• There are accessibility features built into Android devices.
  • Enable/disable the TalkBack screen reader by:
    • Press both the volume buttons on the side of the phone simultaneously for three seconds (to confirm this action, you need to hold both volume buttons again for three seconds).
    • With “Google Assistant” by saying “Hey Google” and then “Turn on/off TalkBack.”
    • Through settings by selecting Accessibility > TalkBack > Enable/Disable.
  • You can use a TalkBack braille keyboard (if TalkBack is on and magnification is off).
  • You can change the display of your Android device. This includes:
    • Changing the display and font size of items on the screen. 
    • Use magnification to zoom into things on your screen.
    • You can adjust the contrast of your screen.
  • Use Select to Speak to hear text read aloud (pointing your camera to listen to something described or read aloud).
  • You can turn on captions and specify different languages, text, and styles for your device.
  • There are sound amplifiers or hearing aid support available on Android devices.
