Overview
The Display Techniques for EPUB Accessibility Metadata 1.0, published by the Publishing Community Group under the W3C Community Group, outlines and instructs how to display the accessibility metadata of EPUBs. Library staff should use this resource when displaying their metadata for patrons.
This information was summarized from the Display Techniques for EPUB Accessibility Metadata 1.0 report.
Quick Facts
The report outlines both how to display and how determine what accessibility metadata exists in an EPUB. There are many different examples of this in the report, including the following:
- Determining if the EPUB is “Screen Reader Friendly.”
- If the <schema:accessModeSufficient> metadata property has the value “textual,” then display “Screen Reader Friendly: Yes.” If there are multiple examples of this metadata field in one EPUB, you only need one of them to have the value “textual” (by itself and without any other value).
- If the <schema:accessModeSufficient> metadata property has the value “textual, visual” or just “visual,” then display “Screen Reader Friendly: No.”
- If the <schema:accessModeSufficient> metadata property does not exist or is empty, then display “Screen Reader Friendly:
Unknown or not provided
.”
- Determining if the EPUB has an “Accessibility Summary.”
- If the <schema:accessibilitySummary> metadata property has a summary, then you display “Accessibility Summary: This is the summary….”
- If the <schema:accessibilitySummary> metadata property does not have a summary or isn’t present, than display “Accessibility Summary: None provided.”
- Determining who the EPUB is “Certified By.”
- If the <a11y:certifiedBy> metadata property has the value of a certifying company, then display “Certified By: Company Name.”
- If the <a11y:certifiedBy> metadata property has the value of a publisher name, then display “Certified By: Publisher Name.”
- If the <a11y:certifiedBy> metadata property is missing or does not have a value, then display “Certified By: None Provided.”
Other metadata fields discussed in this report are:
- Full Audio
- Accessibility Conformance
- Certified Credential
- Certified Report
- Hazard
- All Accessibility Metdata
