Accessibility in Library Facilities and Spaces

Let’s begin by learning the basics about accessibility in the library, including areas in your library to consider, information about assistive technologies, and legislation summaries.

The total time to complete this section is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  • Checklist: Accessibility 101: We suggest you use this checklist as a guide for library staff when they are starting their accessibility journey as it summarizes information from the other Accessibility 101 resources and is intended as a training aid for library staff beginning their accessibility journey. (30 minutes).
  • Legislation Summaries: In this resource, we summarize the existing and, when possible, upcoming accessibility legislation in Canada. To meet the legislative requirements, creating an accessible space and providing accessible services must be prioritized (20 minutes).
  • Assistive Technology Demonstrations: Assistive technology refers to products, equipment, and systems that enhance reading, learning, working, and daily living for people with disabilities. In this resource, we provide assistive technology demonstrations (35 minutes).
